Kings Mountain High School
Shelby’s high powered offense struggled on a wet, rainy night in Kings Mountain but the defense and special teams played a big role in the Golden Lion’s victory in The Battle of Buffalo Creek 34-20 over the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers received the opening kickoff but after a 3 and out, Kings mountain had to punt. An errant snap went into the end zone and was recovered by Shelby’s Michael Carson for a Touchdown. The first quarter would end with Shelby leading 7-0. Both teams scored twice in the 2nd quarter. Darren Burns for KM threw 2 touchdown passes, 3 yards to Jake Merchant and 59 yards to Kavin Mosely. Shelby’s Xavier Brooks returned a kickoff for 71 yards for a score and Darquez Lee threw a 47 yard pass to Jayden Borders for the other TD in the quarter. Shelby led at half-time 21-14
Shelby had difficulty with their passing game but had success running the ball finishing with only 107 yards passing while running for 207 yards.The Golden Lions scored 2 more touchdowns in the 3rd quarter, a 4 yard run by Xavier Brooks and a 55 yard run by Antwan Wright. The Mountaineers scored on a 70 yard pass from Darren Burns to Kavin Mosely. Km had success in their passing game but struggled in the running game finishing with 76 yards rushing and 256 yards passing. Shelby is now 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Smoky Mountain Athletic Conference. Shelby will host the East Burke Cavaliers next week for homecoming.
Defensively, the Golden Lions were led by Dax Hollifield (16 total tackles including 5 tackles for loss and 1 sack) Joslen McGill (7 total tackles including 3 tackles for loss and 1 sack), Michael Carson (8 total tackles including 2 tackles for loss and 1 sack, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 TD), Aaron Jolly (8 total tackles and 2 blocked extras points).
