Game Recap

For the first time in school history, The Golden Lions won a third consecutive 2A State Championship at Carter-Finley Stadium on the campus of North Carolina State University. Darquez Lee had 5 TD passes which tied a state championship game record. Lee finished with 265 yards on 16/32 passing. Lee was selected as the Overall -player of the game. The offensive MVP went to Xavier Brooks who had 29 rushing attempts for 176 yards and 2 TD’s. Brooks also had 4 receptions for 52 yards. Defensive MVP went to Dax Hollifield who finished with 8 total tackles including 2 for loss and 1 sack.

The Golden Lions have now won 15 consecutive playoff games and 25 consecutive games vs 2A teams. The defense held Kinston to 8 rushing yards and 209 yards passing. The Golden Lion offense gained 464 yards of total offense. Damien Key became the first Golden Lion to return an interception for a touchdown in a state championship game with his 33 yard return in the 4th quarter which extended Shelby’s lead to 57-13. Kinston added a touchdown with a few seconds left to play for the final score of 57-21.
