The Golden Lions traveled to Morganton to face the Freedom Patriots. The only TD scored in the first half by either team was a 32yd interception return by Freedom which produced a half-time score of 7-0. This is the 1st time Shelby had trailed in a game since the Western Regional finals in the 2015 season. It had been 73 games since Shelby had been shut-out at the half. The lost team to hold Shelby to zero at the half was Freedom on 9/14/12.
The Golden Lion offense only managed 96 total yards of offense in the 1st half but finished with 256 total yards of offense after gaining 160 total yards in the 2nd half. The Golden Lions had 165 yards rushing and 91 yards passing. Xavier Brooks led the way with 26 rushing attempts for 133 yards and 1 TD and added 4 receptions for 25 yards. Malik Sarratt scored the winning TD with 3:03 minutes left in the game on a 23 yard run which featured several broken tackles. The senior QB would not be denied.
The Golden Lion defense allowed 159 yards of total offense and kept the Patriot offense out of the end zone. Jaylon Scott led the way with 11 total tackles including 2 tackles for loss and a forced fumble and also recovered the fumble. Dax Hollifield added 9 total tackles including 1 tackle for loss and younger brother Jack Hollifield (Freshman) added 5 total tackles including 2 tackles for loss. Shaimez Poston had an interception on Freedom’s first possession of the game. Dorian Davis sealed the win with a 4th quarter interception with less than 2 minutes left in the game. The Golden Lions ran out the clock to complete a 14-7 come from behind win.
The Golden Lions will be at home for the next 3 weeks beginning with AC Reynolds next Friday night (8/25) at 7:30 at George Blanton Memorial Stadium.
