The 2017 edition of the Battle of Buffalo Creek proved to be an instant classic which took overtime to decide the winner. After the Mountaineers scored a field goal on their opening overtime possession, the Golden Lions scored a touchdown on the 2nd play of their overtime possession to take a 20-17 win and defeating the Mountaineers for the 7th consecutive season. The Mountaineers will begin conference play next Friday. The Golden Lions will travel to Rock Hill South Carolina to take on 3 time defending state champions, the South Pointe Stallions.
The offense was led by senior RB Xavier “DaDa” Brooks who had 22 rushing attempts for 129 yards and 2 TD’s. Brooks now has 641 yards rushing and 10 TD’s after the first 5 games of the season. The Golden Lions only completed 3 passes on the night but the biggest came in overtime as Malik Sarratt found Santanna Eaves wide open in the end zone for a 17 yard completion and a Golden Lion victory. The offense finished with 190 total yards (162 rushing/28 passing).
The defense was lead by Dax Hollifield and Will Stites. Hollifield finished with 15 total tackles including 3 tackles for loss. Stites had 13 total tackles. Bryant Spencer had 9 total tackles including 1 tackle for loss. Trey Darlington had 8 total tackles including 2 tackles for loss. Dashaun Christopher added 8 total tackles. Jaylon Scott had 5 total tackles including 2 tackles for loss and an interception which led to the game tying TD by Xavier Brooks. The defense allowed Kings mountain to gain 231 total yards (116 rushing/115 passing).
On a side note, the Golden Lions swept their county foes for the 2nd consecutive season.
