Game Recap

The Golden Lions hosted the Newton-Conover Red Devils in the 1st round of the 2017 2AA state playoffs. The Golden Lions took the opening kickoff and started from their own 20 yard line. The Lions drove 80 yards in 16 plays to take an early 7-0 lead after Malik Sarratt scored on a 7 yard run. The red devils first play from scrimmage ended with a turnover as Shamar Baker was intercepted by Shelby’s Dashaun Christopher who returned the interception 51 yards for a TD. The Golden Lions would also score on their next possession (15 yard TD pass to Maleek McMullens from Malik Sarratt) and would lead 21-6 after the first quarter. Shelby would add 21 points in the 2nd quarter on 3 TD runs by Xavier Brooks and would lead at the half, 42-14. Both teams had 3 possessions each in the 2nd half and each scoring on one of those possessions. The Golden Lions advances to the 2nd round with a 49-20 win. The Golden Lions will now make a return trip to Belmont next Friday night to play the South Point Red Raiders.

The Golden Lions offense was lead by Malik Sarratt who had 10 rushing attempts for 67 yards and 1 TD, 18 of 23 passing for 182 yards and 1 TD. Xavier Brooks had 19 rushing attempts for 115 yards and 4 TD’s, 4 receptions for 52 yards. Xavier added 2 new school records to his list of accomplishments for the Golden Lions. Brooks now has the school record for most career rushing attempts (527) and the record for most rushing TD’s (51). The Golden Lions would finish with 414 total yards of offense, 232 rushing & 182 passing.

The Golden Lions defense held the Newton-Conover offense to 207 total yards (-19 rushing & 226 passing). The defense combined for 9 tackles for loss and 6 sacks. Will Stites had 4 total tackles including 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack and 1 fumble recovery. Tre’ Jolly added 4 tackles including 2 tackles for loss and 1 sack.

Game Recap

The Golden Lions traveled to Belmont to face the South Point Red Raiders for the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship. The Red Raiders started the scoring early, blocking a punt on Shelby’s first possession and recovering for a TD. The Red Raiders added a TD on their first possession of the game and added another TD in the 2nd quarter and led at half-time 21-3 on their way to a 35-15 victory.

The Golden Lion offense was led by senior running back Xavier Brooks who had 14 rushing attempts for 58 yards, 5 receptions for 96 yards and 1 TD, 2 kickoff returns for 140 yards and 1 TD (a 96 yard return in the 4th quarter). Malik Sarratt was 21/38 passing for 219 yards and 1 TD. Santanna Eaves added 5 receptions for 51 yards. Zondre Cherry also had 5 receptions for 36 yards. The Golden Lions offense finished with 275 yards of offense (56 rushing/219 passing).

The Golden Lion defense was led by Dashaun Christopher who had 9 total tackles including 1 tackles for loss. KJ Washington added 8 total tackles including 1 tackle for loss. Jaylon Scott also had 8 total tackles including 1 tackle for loss. Nick Stites caused a fumble that was recovered by Dax Hollifield. The Golden Lion offense allowed 341 yards of total offense, all by rushing.

Both teams will begin the state playoffs next Friday November 10th.

Game Recap

The Golden Lions hosted the East Rutherford Cavaliers on Senior night. The class of 1992 and 1997 were in attendance for their reunions. The 3A championship team of 1987 were also recognized. The Golden Lions defeated the Cavaliers 28-7. The Golden Lions (9-1, 4-0) will travel to Belmont to face the South Point Red Raiders (10-0, 4-0) for the conference championship.

The Golden Lions found themselves in a defensive battle in the first quarter and the quarter ended scoreless for both teams. Shelby had only 23 total yards in the quarter while the Cavaliers had 63 total yards. Shelby rebounded in the 2nd quarter, scoring 14 points on TD runs by Malik Sarratt (9 yards) and Xavier Brooks (12 yards). The Golden Lions had 157 total yards in the quarter. Malik Sarratt threw 2 TD passes in the 3rd quarter to Xavier Brooks (67 yards) and Fabian Pettis (68 yards). The Golden Lions would finish with 405 total yards of offense (124 rushing, 281 passing. Xavier Brooks tied the school record for most TD’s (62 career TD’s).

The Golden Lions defense was led by their 3 linebackers who combined for 30 total tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 1 caused fumble, and 1 fumble recovery. Dax Hollifield had 11 total tackles including 3 tackles for loss and 1 sack. Will Stites had 9 total tackles including 3 tackles for loss and 1 sack. Jaylon Scott had 10 total tackles including 2 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 1 caused fumble, and 1 fumble recovery. Dorian Davis intercepted his 4th pass of the season. The defense held the Cavaliers to 225 total yards (173 rushing, 52 passing).
