The Golden Lions hosted the Maiden Blue Devils in the 2nd Round of the 2AA Playoffs. This was the first meeting between the two teams since the 2000 regular season. Shelby has won all 5 games against Maiden. The Golden Lions started out quickly and scored on their first 2 possessions to take a 14-0 lead in the first quarter but then faced a little adversity. The Golden Lions committed 3 turnovers in the first half, 2 fumbles, both in Maiden territory, and an interception was Maiden returned for their only points of the game. After the Blue Devils cut the lead to 14-7, the Golden Lions scored 35 unanswered points for a 49-7 win. The Golden Lions advance to the 3rd round and will host the West Lincoln Rebels next Friday at Blanton Memorial Stadium. The winner of the Shelby/West Lincoln game will play the winner of the North Lincoln/Burns game in the 2AA Western Regional Finals. The Golden Lions are aiming for their 7th consecutive trip to the Western Regional Finals and their 9th in the last 10 seasons.
The Golden Lions offense generated 412 yards (176 rushing/236 passing) and 20 first downs. Isaiah Bess completed 15 of 23 pass attempts for 236 yards and 2 TD’s. The offensive line did not allow a sack. Diavonni Daley caught 7 passes for 121 yards and 2 TD’s. Ja’hari Mitchell had 5 receptions for 65 yards, 3 rushing attempts for 34 yards and 2 rushing TD’s. Omar Phillips had 12 rushing attempts for 88 yards and 2 TD’s.
The Golden Lions defense allowed 102 yards of offense to the Blue Devils (29 yards rushing/ 73 yards passing). Jack Hollifield had 8 total tackles including 3 tackles for loss and 2 sacks. Malaki Hamrick had 7 total tackles including 2 tackles for loss and 1 sack. Diavonni Daley and Deshawn Jones had interceptions.
