The Golden Lions hosted the Burns Bulldogs for the 2nd time this season. This time the stakes were a little higher with the winner advancing to the State Championship game. The Golden Lions started out quickly and scored on their first 4 possessions in the first half to take a 28-7 lead at halftime. The Golden Lions added 2 more scores in the 2nd half to defeat the Bulldogs 42-14. The Golden Lions will play the Salisbury Hornets in the 2AA State Championship on December 14 at Wake Forest University. The Golden Lions will be looking to capture their 2nd consecutive state title and their 6th in the last 7 seasons.

The Golden Lions offense had 372 yards of offense (191 rushing/181 passing) and 18 first downs. The Golden Lions used a well-balanced attack to defeat the bulldogs. Burns did not have an answer for Shelby’s Ja’hari Mitchell, who scored all 6 of Shelby’s TD’s ( 1 receiving and 5 rushing). Mitchell set the school record for most total TD’s in a game, tied the record for most rushing TD’s in a game and tied the school record for most total TD’s in a season. Mitchell finished with 10 rushing attempts for 104 yards, 2 receptions for 35 yards. Isaiah Bess was 12/17 passing for 181 yards and 1 TD. The Golden Lions had zero turnovers. Diavonni Daley had 5 receptions for 65 yards. Jecari Shell had 3 receptions for 62 yards.
The Golden Lions defense allowed 337 yards to the Bulldogs (225 rushing/112 passing) but only allowed the Bulldogs to cross the end zone twice. The Bulldogs had 6 possessions in Shelby territory but only came away with 14 points. Malaki Hamrick led the way with 13 total tackles including 4 tackles for loss and 2 sacks. Jack Hollifield had 8 total tackles including 2 tackles for loss. Ethan Mitchell had 5 total tackles including 2 tackles for loss and 1 sack. Quavis Tate had 7 total tackles.
