The Golden Lions hosted the Crest Chargers in the annual County Rival matchup which same may call, “The Family Feud.” In most years, this game features relatives playing against each other, households are divided as Shelby grads have children who attend Crest and Crest grads who have children attend Shelby, Shelby grads marrying Crest grads and vice versa.
The Golden lions scored on their 2nd possession for a 7-0 lead and on the next possession by the chargers, Diavonni Daley intercepted a pass by Crest’s DJ Fuller and returned the interception 45 yards for a TD and after the extra point, the Golden Lions led 14-0. Crest would score on their next possession and the 1st quarter would end with Shelby leading 14-7. The Golden Lions would add 3 more TD’s in the 2nd quarter, a 72 yard pass from Isaiah Bess to Jahari Mitchell, a 7 yard run by Isaiah Bess, and a 48 yard Interception return by Malaki Hamrick. Tim Ruff scored his 2nd TD of the night and Shelby led at the half 34-14. In the 3rd quarter, the Golden Lions added 10 more points and keeping the Chargers off the scoreboard. Both teams would add a TD in the 4th quarter and the Golden Lions would prevail 51-21. 51 points is the most points scored by the victors in the series between the teams. The Golden Lions will travel to Kings Mountain next Friday for the “Battle of Buffalo Creek.”
The Golden Lions offensive line didn’t allow a sack and paved the way to 431 yards of offense (100 yards rushing/ 331 passing yards). Isaiah Bess completed 11 of 19 passes for 331 yards and 2 passing TD’s and 1 rushing TD. Omar Phillips had 2 TD’s. Diavonni Daley had 4 receptions for 123 yards. Jahari Mitchell had 4 receptions for 116 yards and 2 TD’s. Kamarde Huskey had 3 receptions for 92 yards. Donye Fuller returned to action after sitting out the first 2 games due to injury and had 53 yards rushing.
The Golden Lions Defense returned 2 interceptions for touchdowns and limited the Chargers to 259 yards of offense (198 rushing/61 passing). Jack Hollifield led the way with 18 total tackles including 1 tackle for loss. Malaki Hamrick had 6 total tackles including 2 tackles for loss and 1 sack along with his interception. Dashaun Christopher had 6 total tackles and Quavis Tate had 6 total tackles. Nick Stites added 6 tackles including 1 tackle for loss.
