The Shelby Golden Lions and the Hibriten Panthers engaged in an epic battle for the 2018 2AA Western Regional Championship. Hibriten scored first to take a 7-0 lead but Shelby scored 14 unanswered points in the 2nd quarter and Shelby led at halftime 14-7 but Hibriten scored 14 unanswered points in the 3rd quarter to take a 21-14 lead going into the 4th quarter. The Golden Lions again scored 14 unanswered points in the 4th quarter and scored the winning TD with 58 seconds left in the game to defeat the Panthers 28-21 and ending the Panther’s 30 game winning streak. The win sends the Golden Lions to the 2AA State Championship game next Saturday at 2:30pm at NC State University vs the North Davidson Black Knights.

The Golden Lions had 404 yards of total offense (50 rushing/354 passing) and 21 first downs. Isaiah Bess was 25/42 passing for 354 yards and 3 TD’s. Zondre Cherry had 7 receptions for 148 yards and 2 TD’s and Diovanni Daley had 8 receptions for 128 yards and the game-winning TD.

The Golden Lions allowed Hibriten 327 yards of total offense (319 rushing/ 8 passing) and only 10 first downs. Jack Hollifield has 11 total tackles. Dashaun Christopher finished with 7 total tackles. Jaylon Scott had 5 total tackles including 2 tackles for loss and 1 sack. KJ Washington had 6 total tackles including 1 tackles for loss and 1 interception. Malaki Hamrick had 4 total tackles including 2 tackles for loss and 1 sack.
